Westmead is the centre of transformational health services, research and education in Western Sydney, internationally recognised for its depth and scale of expertise.
As one of the largest health precincts in Australia, we’re creating new ways of solving health challenges through integrated research, education, technology and collaboration. Home to around 2,500 students and 1,000 staff members and affiliates, Westmead Health Precinct is a state-of-the-art centre for study, research and clinical placements.
The University of Sydney has invested over $85 million into the precinct, providing new education facilities, upgrades to existing spaces, and a suite of new academic programs and initiatives alongside our partners at the precinct. Since 2016, Westmead has generated $49 million in research income per annum, including affiliated medical institutes.

The University of Sydney’s research centres in Westmead leverage their unique context in western Sydney, with its diverse populations and prevalence of chronic illness, to address the causes of chronic disease locally, nationally and globally.
By offering a transformational approach to solving problems – both in health and through multidisciplinary collaboration – we go outside the walls of the University into community and society and improve the lives of the communities we serve.
Our research centres at Westmead contribute to largest and most dynamic translational research ecosystem in Australia, with a focus on person-centred innovation and education.
Our staff and students are based across the Westmead Precinct in three major medical research institutes, two large-scale University of Sydney teaching hospitals and the largest pathology service in NSW. Â
The University’s presence at Westmead which has continued for more than 45 years since Westmead Hospital was established, provides our students with access to some of the best clinicians and researchers in Australia and internationally.
In 2021, the University opened its new space in Westmead Hospital Block K. The University’s space spans approximately 5000 sqm and includes new technology-enabled learning and study spaces for students and a central staff workplace.
As a clearly defined University space and central precinct meeting point, our space fosters collaboration and communication among all our staff and students and increases integration between the University of Sydney, Westmead Hospital, and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

My time at the Westmead campus was an amazing experience, with a great interdisciplinary team and exciting opportunities. It was very valuable to get hands-on learning in the lab with specialised technologies and access to support when needed. It was also immersing to connect at various events such as onsite conferences, presentations and initiatives.
