About this major

The Genetics and Genomics major will allow you to investigate a multitude of life forms and their biochemical, molecular and genetic interactions – from viruses, bacteria and protozoans to fungi, plants and animals, including humans.

The major involves learning and understanding research in the medical sciences from a range of interconnected disciplines including biochemistry, microbiology, molecular and cell biology, genetics and bioinformatics.

Genetics is the scientific study of genes and inheritance, and Genomics is the study of the complete sequence of DNA and genes (ie: the genome, which make up all organisms on Earth). 

Together, Genetics and Genomics offer the promise of diagnosis and treatment of disease in humans, plants and animals. 

The Genetics and Genomics major is ideal for students who wish to understand how to develop novel biotechnology products, improve the health of humans and animals, conserve biodiversity and diagnose and control of pests, parasites.
