Specialisation

About this specialisation

The Magnetic Resonance (MR) Imaging specialisation is primarily designed for professionals working within the field of medical imaging.

It provides students with a solid knowledge base of the important technical and theoretical aspects of MRI along with an understanding of the clinical applications of this imaging technology.

ThisĀ specialisation comprises four Units of Ļć½¶Ö±²„ (MR Theory, MR A, MR B and MR C). Firstly, in MR theory, students will examine the principles of magnetic resonance with the learning supported by recommended texts, recorded lectures, e-texts and online practicals using a remote-access MRI system.

Subsequently in the weekly learning modules of MR A, B and C Ā the application of MR theory to the field of medical imaging will be studied Ā to allow students to develop an understanding of MR hardware requirements, RF coils, pulse sequences, spatial encoding, parameter manipulation and common image artefacts as they pertain to MR Imaging.

Students will then utilise this knowledge to study a range of examination techniques from the more basic musculoskeletal studies through to studies of the Ā central nervous system (including perfusion, diffusion, angiography, fMRI and proton spectroscopy techniques) and on to body examinations (including cardiac, breast, liver, foetal, prostate etc). Emerging technologies such as MR-PET, non-proton and ultra-high field MRI will also be investigated in these Units of Ļć½¶Ö±²„.

Learning resources include e-texts, peer-reviewed, journal articles, videos and webpages along with tutorial tasks, practice quizzes and weekly online discussion topics. Learning will also be supported by clinical case examples which demonstrate the appropriate application of different MR sequences and modifications required for different patient presentations.

Graduate opportunities

Students awarded the Masters degree with specialisation in MRI are well-prepared to move into more senior, dedicated MRI radiographer/technologist roles in public and private health institutions.

Imaging and other professionals with advanced technical MRI skills and experience are also sought-after for senior and leadership roles in clinical, research and academic settings and are ideally positioned to be influential in MRI protocol, procedure and policy development.
