These design standards, forms, guidelines and signage manuals must be used by consultants and contractors for design, documentation and construction of buildings, facilities, services and infrastructure owned, occupied and/or managed by the University of Sydney.
All planners, project managers, consultants, contractors, subcontractors, tenants, managing agents and University staff must conform to requirements in these documents when designing, constructing, operating or maintaining existing and proposed University buildings and facilities.
The documents set out the University of Sydney's minimum requirements for the design, construction and maintenance of buildings, facilities, spaces, services and infrastructure.
These standards aim to deliver a built environment.
Applicable requirements documented in Workplace Health and Safety legislation, Disability Discrimination legislation, State Environmental Planning legislation, Commonwealth and state legislation, National Construction Codes (NCC), the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and Australian and New Zealand Standards (AS/NZS) are the minimum and mandatory compliance requirements.
Where any ambiguity exists between these documents and the aforementioned mandatory requirements then:
a. the highest performance requirements must apply
b. applicable requirements must follow this order of precedence.
These design standards must be incorporated into contract documentation. They must be referred to by the revision number and issue date listed on the cover of each of the documents.
All requests for technical clarification on any information contained in a standard must be made in writing to the issuer of the standard, as shown on its cover page.
The following forms may be referenced in Design Standards and must be used by project managers, consultants, contractors, subcontractors, tenants and managing agents.
These guidelines will be revised and issued as University Design Standards in due course. Please check with the relevant Project Manager for clarification on the current version of these documents and their applicability.
Signage across the University must conform to the following.
The University of Sydney is committed to providing a safe working environment. This commitment extends to all contractors, subcontractors and suppliers of services to our campuses and properties.
The Contractor Online Induction has been developed to outline the requirements of contractors undertaking works (construction, maintenance, etc.) for or on behalf of the University.
As a prior condition to commencing any work within one of our campuses, contractors are required to complete the Contractor Online Induction to ensure an understanding of the University’s WHS management systems and to provide specific rules for working on site. For instructions on completing this induction, please see the below steps.
By completing this induction, it is intended that everyone working within the University will be able to play their role in maintaining a safe workplace for all.
Any failure to follow these rules can result in:
Contractors are unable to proceed with works on any University of Sydney campus or property without successfully completing the online induction.
If your company has been onboarded to the Contractor Safety Management System (CSMS), you will use this system to complete your Contractor Online Induction, along with any other onboarding requirements.
If it’s your first time accessing CSMS, see our starter guides for additional support
You can access and complete the Contractor Online Induction through CSMS from your phone, tablet, desktop or laptop.

Launched in 2025, Alpha Tracker is the University’s web-based function designed to improve the management of asbestos and other hazardous materials across each campus.
Alpha Tracker houses all applicable Hazardous Infrastructure Materials Site Registers and associated documentation/reports.
Prior to any works, the Contractor must check the applicable Hazardous Infrastructure Materials Site Register(s) for the building and determine whether works will disturb hazardous materials. Alpha Tracker can be accessed via the CSMS.
The following two Quick Reference Guides (QRG), which are in the CSMS section of this page, provide instructions on how to access Alpha Tracker via the CSMS Document Control Module and Permit to Work Module:
Detailed within the QRG, each relevant building in the CSMS has a one-page instruction document containing a URL that gives access to Alpha Tracker and the related hazardous materials information.
If you require access to Alpha Tracker outside of using the CSMS, email cos.hse@sydney.edu.au and access details will be sent to you.
In addition, there are one-page instruction documents displayed in common areas of various buildings that contain a QR code, which once scanned, provide direct access to the building’s hazardous materials information within Alpha Tracker.
This document outlines the minimum insurances that required by consultants and building contractors.
If a contract or agreement is to have Insurance less than the amounts outlinedby the document, then the lesser amount must be approved by the Director, Strategy and Assurance.
