SafeZone is a free safety app for all students and staff and part of our commitment to keeping our community safe. It connects you quickly with Protective Services and emergency teams and sends important safety notifications.
Students and staff can now download the SafeZone app for their or device.
SafeZone enables you to quickly contact Protective Services for emergencies, first aid, or general assistance, and receive important, urgent notifications in the event of an incident or emergency.
If you raise an alert, SafeZone securely shares your location with Protective Services so help can reach you faster.
SafeZone connects you directly with Protective Services, emergency services and the University's support and wellbeing offerings. It provides our students and staff quick access to help through a simple, one-tap interface, saving you time in the event of an emergency, if first aid is required, or if you just need general assistance around campus.
SafeZone also sends real-time safety alerts through app-based push notifications and via SMS, including location-specific information depending on which campus you're at or building you're in.
Students and staff who elect not to download the app and are not registered in SafeZone will still receive SMS alerts from the University in the event of a critical incident or emergency. Make sure your details are up to date in (students) or (staff).
SafeZone is available in any region that the University of Sydney places a geofence.Users can raise alerts and use the full functionality of the app if they are within a University of Sydney region. When a user tries to raise an alert outside of a designated University of Sydney region, the app will then ask the user to call 000 and connect them with emergency services.
SafeZone works across the following University of Sydney campuses:
As we roll out SafeZone at more of our campuses, including our satellite sites in regional areas, they will be added to this page. Users can also browse regions and locations where SafeZone is available within the app via a list or map view.
When you raise an alert, SafeZone securely shares your real-time location with Protective Services, enabling them to dispatch the nearest security personnel, monitor nearby CCTV, and coordinate with emergency services for the quickest possible assistance.
The Emergency button (red button) should be used:
Use the First Aid call (green button) if you, or someone else requires first aid treatment. A qualified first aid officer will be dispatched to your location to assist.
The Call Security button (blue button) should be used:
If you’re working alone in a lab with chemicals, studying late in a quiet space, or walking across campus at night, you can set a timed check-in. If you don’t check out when the timer ends, Protective Services is automatically notified so they can make contact and ensure you’re safe. When you're checked in, your location is shared with Protective Services.
Check in is not required or expected for regular students and staff.
Beyond emergencies, SafeZone provides quick access to mental health and wellbeing services, helping you connect with the right support when you’re feeling stressed, anxious or overwhelmed.
Using the Wellbeing Support button (yellow button) will connect you with the relevant support services here at the University and externally.

SafeZone is a new component of the University's comprehensive safety ecosystem to ensure the wellbeing and safety of our students, staff and visitors. SafeZone enables and streamlines the work of our Protective Services and incident response teams, and helps us carry out our duties in line with our recently updated University Emergency and Incident Response Plan (UEIRP), and sits alongside other apps available to students and staff, like the Sydney Uni App and Sonder.
Together these systems form proactive safety measures, rapid response capabilities and communication across the University community.
A 24/7 app that enables emergency assistance and alerts, hazard/incident reporting, a check-in system for those working or studying alone, and can connect you with University safety and wellbeing services.
A central hub for students, helping you access campus services, campus maps, timetables, a wide range of helpful contacts, and general updates and information.
A 24/7 app for international students, providing on-demand access to wellbeing and safety professionals and resources.
The University uses the SafeZone Emergency Communication System to send emergency messages to staff, students and other University affiliates.
SafeZone also offers the SafeZone app, an optional service which provides enhanced security. When you download SafeZone to your smartphone, you will be asked to agree to the SafeZone End User License Agreement and to provide your name, University email address and password. You have the option to provide additional information for use with the app, including a photo to help Protective Services identify you when responding to an alert.
Location services must be turned on to use the SafeZone app. SafeZone's use of location services has been designed to minimise battery use. The University does not track your location unless you press the check-in timer or raise an alert.
For more details, see the full SafeZone privacy notice below or visit the privacy webpage for information on handling, accessing, or correcting your data, or making enquiries or complaints.
The University uses the SafeZone Emergency Communication System to deliver emergency communications, coordinate incident response, support lone workers and welfare check-ins, and provide targeted safety notifications to staff, students and any other individuals who nominate their interest in using this system.
SafeZone is owned by Critical Arc.
The primary purpose of SafeZone is to support the safety of the University community. In the event of an incident, the University will use SafeZone to issue important alerts immediately and effectively to people across the University environment.
In the event of an emergency, Protective Service team will use University contact information to initiate a mass communication via the SafeZone system. This will send alert messages to people’s phones and messages through the Sydney Uni App, Microsoft Teams, University email, SMS and SafeZone application.
There are two components of SafeZone – the emergency broadcast service and the SafeZone app.
For necessary emergency broadcasts, SafeZone will collect your name and contact details (mobile number and email) from the University’s staff and student system.
To ensure the University can communicate effectively with you in an emergency, it is the responsibility of all staff and students to keep their contact details up to date in the staff and student system.
If you work for another organisation operating on University grounds, we will collect the name and contact details of designated employees from your organisation and send them alerts of any incidents. Those designated employees will then be able to coordinate a response via your organisation’s usual channels.
Downloading and using the SafeZone app is voluntary, if you would like additional support from the University in an emergency.
