Registrations open soon

Each year we host a careers fair with some of the world's top recruiters and employers that offer investment banking and consultancy career opportunities, including internship and graduate positions.Ìý

Many of these employers will also be conductingÌýEmployer Information SessionsÌýfrom early in Semester 1.

Investment bankers assist clients to achieve their strategic and financial objectives by offering them a wide range of sophisticated financial services. These may include the raising of capital, delivering risk management solutions and offering mergers and acquisitions advice.

A career in investment banking offers global opportunities. Graduates will generally commence work as analysts, and will work with clients throughout the world, including governments, corporations and other financial institutions, as well as professional investors (eg: fund managers).

Consultancy roles can be found within specialist consultancy firms or large organisations with a dedicated consulting practice.

Consultants address a wide range of challenges related to managing business operations in both the commercial and government sectors. They provide expertise in a range of services including: strategy and business case development; benefits tracking and process improvement; change management; technology consulting; HR; planning; surveying; engineering; scientific; business advisory; and projects responsible for environmental practices.

Sydney University students who are interested in working for an investment bank or consultancy firm are encouraged to attend this fair. It is open to students from all faculties.

Connect with representatives of leading global and niche specialist consultancy and investment banking firms to discuss careers and key skills required.

Before the fair

Preparing yourself is the best way to help you stand out from the competition at the fair and to get the most out of attending the event.Ìý

Before you meet with employers, it's important to research who the employers are and what they're looking for in potential candidates. Start by checking out the career fairs you're interested in, and find out which employers are attending. Identify the organisations that interest you most and consider why you have short listed them. Visit their websites to research what they do and the opportunities they are offering, and prepare questions based on your research.

Many of these employers conduct on-campus or online information sessions throughout the year. Monitor the events calendar onÌýÌýfor details.

You might find it helpful to prepare and rehearse aÌýÌýabout yourself which you can tailor to each employer and their company needs.

You should also prepare a list of impressive questions to ask (don’t ask about things you could have found out on their website!). These might include questions about the representative’s career path, projects that they have worked on, the skills and attributes they seek from applicants and the graduate program on offer.

Resources to help you prepare:

  • Learn about information interviews and explore sample questions.
  • Need help with your resume? Review and update your resume using the Careers Centre’s onlineÌýresume writingÌýinformation.
  • Upload your updated resume to ourÌýÌýfor instant feedback.

During the fair

Dress like a professional – it’s good to wear what you would to a job interview. Whilst employers don'tÌýexpectÌýyou to wear a suit at a Careers Fair you do want to look professional and well dressed.

Smile and make eye contact with the exhibitor before introducing yourself. Throughout the conversation, make sure you answer any questions clearly and confidently.

Take notes of any information that will help you to improve your future applications and interview preparation. Where appropriate, ask for a business card or make a note of the name and position of the person you have spoken with, you never know when you might see them again.

The Careers Fair is a great opportunity to meet and connect with new people, both employers and fellow students. Who knows,Ìýyou may end up meeting a future employer or colleague!

If you keep bumping into someone you don't know at different employer stalls, say hello and talk about the fair. You could assume you have a few things in common and discuss the merits of each employer you've come across.

This might be an idea for a career direction that you’ve overlooked or a position available that you wouldn’t have otherwise noticed. Be open to new avenues and challenges.Ìý

After the fair

Review your notes, as well as the information and contacts you collected at the fair. ÌýIf you collected any business cards, send a professionally written thank you email to that representative, mentioning one or two things that you took away from your interaction.

Be sure to connect with your new contacts on LinkedIn. Read up on social media tips.

If making applications, confirm application closing datesÌýand get started, making use of ourÌýCareers Centre servicesÌýthroughout the process.
