We know that studying abroad is a big journey and certainly not an easy one.

It is normal to feel down at times, whether it is because of homesickness, academic stress and pressure, accommodation issues, or financial insecurity.

That’s why here at CET, you can access a range of free counselling services run by our professionally accredited counsellors. Services offered include:

  • Free, confidential one-on-one counselling support
  • Referrals to further professional health services
  • Series of wellbeing workshops
  • Relaxation exercise sessions
  • Access to self-paced learning and various informational resources

If something is confidential, it means that it's private and the counsellor will not share it with anyone. Mental health professionals, including counsellor or psychologist, in Australia are prohibited by law from sharing your confidential information with anyone else, with a few exceptions to this rule (listed below).

CET counsellors will not disclose your personal information or attendance details with anyone outside of the CET Counselling and Wellbeing Support service except if:

  • you have given us your written consent to do so, which may be by your prior approval;
  • it is required or authorised by law;
  • we have reasonable grounds to believe that the disclosure is necessary to lessen or prevent a serious and imminent threat to the life, welfare or health of you or any other person.

This will be discussed further with you at the beginning of a session to clarify any concerns.

Take care of your mental health with our wellbeing workshops, designed to help you thrive in your academic, social, and daily life. These sessions led by our CET Counsellors, provide practical strategies to enhance your mental well-being, build resilience, and stay balanced throughout your studies.

What we cover

  • Social Connection – Build meaningful relationships and a supportive network.
  • Daily Wellbeing – Learn simple habits for a healthier lifestyle.

In addition, our CET counsellors offer a range of relaxation exercises to help you unwind, including:

  • Guided Meditation – Cultivate mindfulness and inner calm.
  • Calming Breathing Techniques – Reduce stress through focused breathing.
  • Mindful Movements – Gentle exercises to promote relaxation.
  • Mindful Eating – Develop a healthier relationship with food.

CET SHAPE (Sexual Health & Peer Education)

Join SHAPE, our peer-led conversational workshops to learn, share, and discuss important topics related to sexual health and well-being in a safe, supportive environment. These workshops offer a judgment-free, inclusive space to engage in open discussions and build knowledge for a healthier, more informed life.

  • Consent – Understanding boundaries and respectful relationships.
  • Safety – How to protect yourself and others in different situations.
  • Cultural Differences & Awareness – Exploring diverse perspectives on relationships and health.
  • Sexual Health & Medical Terminology – Learn key terms and essential knowledge.
  • Contraception – Understanding different methods and options.
  • Access to Local Health Services – Where and how to seek support.

As an international student, you can access five free and easy-to-understand online modules about sexual health, relationships, and consent.

These modules were created by international students, for international students—so they’re designed with your experiences in mind. The information is based on research and shared in a respectful, supportive way, using a trauma-informed care approach.

Each module takes just 7 to 35 minutes to finish, and you’ll get a certificate when you complete each one. You can start learning today, at your own pace.

Enhance your academic success with our Academic Skills Workshops. These are designed to support your CET course and upcoming assessments. Our sessions focus on core skills essential for effective learning, research, and communication.

Workshop topics include:

  • Referencing – Master citation styles and avoid plagiarism.
  • Presentation Preparation – Develop engaging and confident presentation skills.
  • Summarising and Paraphrasing – Learn to condense and reframe information effectively.
  • Synthesising Information – Combine ideas from multiple sources to strengthen your arguments.

Conversation Kit

Conversation Kit is a two-part program designed to help you prepare for university life and study in Sydney.

There are four workshops, held as part of the University of Sydney’s Welcome Program before each semester begins. These sessions provide a relaxed and supportive environment where you can:

  • Meet other international students 
  • Build confidence in speaking English 
  • Learn from our experienced Peer Facilitators — all current USYD students 

You can also  and complete the 4 self-study mini modules in your own time. These modules cover: 

  • Essential tips for navigating life in Sydney 
  • Practical language and communication strategies 
  • How to handle tricky situations, and; 
  • How to ask for help when needed 

By participating in Conversation Kit, you will have the tools to feel more connected, confident and capable when studying at USYD.

CET Chat Club

Looking to practise your English in a relaxed and friendly environment? Join our Chat Club sessions which are peer-facilitated conversation sessions giving you the opportunity to chat with others, build confidence communicating in English, and make new friends—all while discussing fun and engaging topics!

These sessions run throughout your course, covering topics such as:

  • Gaming – Share your favourite games and discover new ones.
  • Australian Food – Explore local cuisine and food culture.
  • Pets – Talk about your furry (or scaly!) companions.
  • Travelling in Australia – Swap travel tips and experiences.
  • Dreams – Discuss fascinating dreams and their meanings.

Pre-arrival modules

Preparing for Life in Australia is a self-paced Canvas course, designed to equip CET students with the essential knowledge required to successfully transition to life and study in Sydney.

The course covers a range of foundational topics, including:

  • Understanding student visa conditions
  • Managing personal finances
  • Ensuring personal safety
  • Adapting to Australian culture
  • Navigating a new academic environment
  • Developing effective communication skills
  • Student wellbeing, and
  • Accessing support services

Students are required to complete all modules prior to their first day of class.

Our city tours take you to explore the most famous neighbourhoods of Sydney including the Rocks, Newtown and Surry Hills. We'll discover some of the local history, the best places to eat and drink and see some of Sydney's most famous landmarks including the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. 

Throughout the term, we'll visit some of Sydney's most famous museums and art galleries, including the Australian Museum, Hyde Park Barracks, and the Art Gallery of NSW, among others.

Join your classmates for themed movie nights, featuring everything from Halloween horrors to Valentine's Day romantic comedies. And of course, there will always be popcorn and snacks!

Our alumni events like our bubble tea mixer connect you with past CET students who can share advice, talk about their experiences, and guide you on your CET journey.
