Academic lauded for outstanding community contribution

University of Sydney engineer Professor Xiaoke Yi has been awarded one of NSW's top engineering honours.

 from the in the , took home the most prestigious award of the night – the NSW Government-sponsored Bradfield Award – at Engineers Australia's 2017 NSW Showcase dinner.

The award is named after John Bradfield, the celebrated engineer and University of Sydney alumnus behind two of Sydney’s most transformative projects: the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the city’s underground railway system.

NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer, Professor Mary O'Kane, presented the award to Professor Yi in recognition of her accomplishment of exceptional engineering merit, which makes a major contribution to the community.

Professor Yi was recognised for her research into nanophotonics and microwave photonics and her research outcome for real-world applications, including a .

University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr Michael Spence congratulated Professor Yi on her achievement.

“This success reflects the high calibre of Professor Yi’s work and her commitment to solving real-world problems,” he said.

Professor Yi said she was honoured to win the prestigious award and represent the University of Sydney.

“I would like to thank my colleagues in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies for their support and the University of Sydney community for encouraging my multidisciplinary research, across my faculty, the  (AINST) and the ,” she said. 

Professor Yi is the ‘Computing, Communication and Security’ theme leader in AINST and part of the first cohort of fellows of the University’s .

She was also named as  in Engineers Australia’s Most Innovative Engineers 2017 awards earlier this year.
