Uveitis (the inflammation of the eye’s uveal tract) and inflammatory eye disease are common causes of vision loss in patients of working age.

In about 30% of patients, uveitis is related to infections including herpes viruses and tuberculosis. In 30%, uveitis is related to an associated systemic disease, and in the remaining 40%, we are unable to identify a cause.

Our research and clinics aim to improve care and outcomes for uveitis and inflammation patients by developing effective treatment therapies and diagnostic tests.

Research areas

Serious ocular infections

Infection is a common cause of uveitis, without early recognition and treatment it leads to severe vision loss and potentially blindness. Important ocular infections include: syphilis, tuberculosis, herpes virus eye infection and toxoplasmosis.

  • Audit of tuberculosis-related inflammation in the eye.
  • Recently completed audits on syphilis in the eye and herpes infections in the retina.

Clinical research

Diagnosis and management of patients with uveitis depends on the use of multi-modal imaging. We have an active collaboration with Associate Professor Alessandro Invernizzi from the University of Milan, a world-leading ocular imaging centre.

  • Sarcoid-related uveitis
  • Paraneoplastic and autoimmune retinopathy
  • Plaquenil toxicity
  • Birdshot choroidopathy
  • Local therapy for uveitis – ozurdex, anti-VEGF agents
  • Biologic therapy for severe uveitis

Paediatric uveitis clinic

A multidisciplinary paediatric uveitis clinic has been functional at the Children’s Hospital Westmead for eight years. The clinic team includes paediatric rheumatologists, paediatricians and several subspeciality-trained ophthalmologists.

Patient care and outcomes in children with severe uveitis.
