  • have completed or be enrolled in ECOP1001, and be enrolled in ECOP1003
  • enrol in a 2000-level Political Economy ECOP2XXX unit to receive the second instalment of their scholarship payment

Background

The Scholarship was established from a donation from Dr Roderick O'Donnell to support equity scholarships in Political Economy at the University of Sydney

1. Background

a. The Scholarship has been generously donated by Dr Roderick O'Donnell to support equity scholarships in Political Economy at the University of Sydney.

2. Eligibility 

a. This Scholarship is offered subject to applicants having an unconditional offer of admission or being currently enrolled full-time in an undergraduate degree or other award courses at the University of Sydney. 

b. Applicants must be completing an undergraduate major in Political Economy.

c. Applicants must have completed or be enrolled in ECOP1001, and be enrolled in ECOP1003.

d. Applicants must enrol in a 2000-level Political Economy ECOP2XXX unit to receive the second instalment of their scholarship payment.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,

II. evidence of financial hardship and 

III. a personal statement that outlines individual and/or family disadvantage, and demonstrates how the scholarship will assist with their studies.

b. Preference will be given to applicants’ ECOP1001 mark when ranking applicants.

c. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee that will consist of the:

I. Chair of Political Economy, and 

II. at least two academic staff from the discipline of Political Economy. 

4. Value

a. A recipient enrolled full-time will receive the scholarship valued at $6,000 per annum for up to one year, with the first instalment being paid in semester 2 of the year of award, and the second instalment being paid in semester 1 of the following year.

b. The scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester. 

c. The scholarship cannot be deferred.

d. The scholarship cannot be suspended  

e. The Scholarship is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.  

f. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds. 

g. No other amount is payable. 

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a weighted average mark (WAM) of at least 65 each semester. 

b. A recipient must enrol in at least one 2000-level Political Economy (ECOP2xxx) unit of study post census date in the year following scholarship award.

c. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment. 

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol in an ECOP2XXX unit in the year following the award 

II. commences part-time study without prior approval of the Head of School, School of Social and Political Sciences, 

III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, 

IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, 

V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for a recipient enrolled full-time or $4,000 per annum or more for a recipient enrolled part-time for the same purpose as this Scholarship, or

VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.  

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.Â
