Who's eligible

You must:

  • beÌýan Australian Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or New Zealand Citizen
  • completed the 2nd year of a chemistry major (Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry) and being currently enrolled full-time in the 3rd year of a chemistry major within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

1. Background

a. Established in 2023, by a generous donation from George S Caird this scholarship will be awarded to high achieving second year students majoring in chemistry as they proceed to the third year of a chemistry major at the University of Sydney.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or New Zealand Citizen.

b. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant having completed the 2nd year of a chemistry major (Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry) and being currently enrolled full-time in the 3rd year of a chemistry major within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded based on academic merit, to be assessed based on average mark across 2 or more 2000-level chemistry units completed previously (any of CHEM2521, CHEM2921, CHEM2991, CHEM2522, CHEM2922, CHEM2523, CHEM2923, CHEM2524, CHEM2924, but not including CHEM2532, CHEM2533, CHEM2534).

b. Preference may be given to applicants who demonstrate evidence of at least one of the following:
I. identity as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island person as defined in the University of Sydney's Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015, and/or
II. financial hardship, long-term medical condition, regional or remote disadvantage or carer responsibilities via .

III. personal statement outlining the impact this scholarship will have on your ability to study and complete a major in Chemistry.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of the Head of School of the School of Chemistry, or their nominated delegate.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $6,000 per annum and is tenable for up to two years.

b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Head of School of the School of Chemistry or their nominated delegate, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty, or university without prior approval.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing Eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 65 each semester and continue to be enrolled in a chemistry Major. If the scholarship is extended to the Honours year, the recipient must enrol in an Honours degree in the School of Chemistry and meet the requirements of the Honours program.

b. If recipients enrol part-time in their degree (domestic students only), they must seek prior approval to hold the scholarship on a part-time basis. Under these circumstances, the payments may be paid on a pro-rata basis.

c. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship may be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. does not proceed to the 3rd year of a chemistry major,
III. commences part-time study without prior approval,
IV. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
V. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
VI. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $6,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship without the prior approval of the Head of School, or
VII. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

a. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

b. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
