Established in 2014, in honour of Walter Moore, Emeritus Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Sydney, the Walter Moore Honours Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students enrolled in the Honours program in the School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney.

1. Background

a. Established in 2014, in honour of Walter Moore, Emeritus Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Sydney, the Walter Moore Honours Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students enrolled in the Honours program in the School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney.

2. Eligibility

a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant having an unconditional offer of full-time admission in an Honours degree within the School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded based on academic merit, to be assessed based on average mark across 3 or more of the following 3000-level chemistry units: CHEM3118, CHEM3119, CHEM3120, CHEM3121, CHEM3122, CHEM3123, CHEM3888, CHEM3918, CHEM3919, CHEM3920, CHEM3921, CHEM3922, CHEM3923, MCHM3001, MCHM3910, MCHM3888 previously completed.

b. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate evidence of at least one of the following:

I. identity as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island person as defined in the University of Sydney's Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015, and/or
II. financial hardship, long-term medical condition, regional or remote disadvantage or carer responsibilities via
III. personal statement outlining the impact this scholarship will have on your ability to study and complete Honours in Chemistry.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of a Selection Committee consisting of the Head of the School of Chemistry, Associate Head of School (Teaching) and the Honours Coordinator, or their nominees.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $5,000 and is tenable for one year only.

b. The Scholarship value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each relevant semester.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Head of the School of Chemistry, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing Eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient the requirements of their honours program.

b. If recipients enrol part-time in their degree (i.e., domestic students only), they must seek prior approval to hold the scholarship on a part-time basis. The payments may be paid on a pro-rata basis.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship may be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
III. does not complete their Chemistry Honours Program,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University, valued at $6,000 per annum or more, such as the University of Sydney Honours Scholarship and George Harris Scholarship in Chemistry Honours without the prior approval of the Head of School,
VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or
any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
