The future of work
Professor John Shields聽from the Business School says there is a misalignment between jobs of the future and the skills that employers are seeking.
鈥淭he jobs are being designed around the聽Internet聽of聽Things, the digital world, but the skills employers are looking for are soft capabilities, which are really at the cutting edge of who is going to get a job and who isn鈥檛,鈥 says Professor Shields.聽
The theme among the top 20 emerging jobs revolve around digital literacy (i.e. artificial intelligence, digital marketing or data science) but, Professor Shields says that those technical and disciplinary skills are not enough.聽
鈥淓mployers want breadth skills that are wide, not just depth skills that are narrow and deep, individuals with those soft skills will be marketable, agile, and adaptable through their career journey.鈥澛
