A joint initiative between the Sydney Environment Institute (SEI), Net Zero Institute (NZI), and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences established the Critical Minerals Network at the University of Sydney. Led by Professor Susan Park, the network brings together researchers from across disciplines to strengthen collaboration and drive innovation in the critical minerals sector.
To mark the launch of this initiative, the Critical Minerals Network hosted its Inaugural Lunch on Tuesday, 2 September 2025, from 12:00 to 1:00 PM at the NZI Merewether venue. This informal gathering was the first in a four-part event series designed to foster collaboration and innovation across disciplines. Attendees had the opportunity to meet fellow researchers, share interests, and explore potential partnerships in a relaxed setting with light refreshments.
Critical minerals play a vital role in powering the global transition to low-carbon technologies and supporting digital infrastructure. They are key components in solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles, batteries, and electronic devices essential to modern life. However, the extraction, processing, and distribution of these minerals involved complex environmental, social, and geopolitical challenges.
The Critical Minerals Network at the University of Sydney fosters interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers from diverse fields to address these challenges through holistic, inclusive, and evidence-based approaches. It also supports early-career researchers by offering skill development and opportunities for collaboration through workshops and events.
This event was an excellent opportunity to engage with a growing community committed to addressing the complex challenges and opportunities presented by critical minerals in shaping a sustainable future.
