TRIPS Hub has been established within the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies at the University of Sydney to maintain, curate, and expand the TRIPS Database — Australia’s first national database of land-use-based trip generation surveys.
Developed with co-funding from TMR Queensland, iMOVE CRC, and the University of Sydney, the TRIPS Database provides a trusted, evidence-based foundation for better transport planning, design, and policy decisions across Australia. It serves as a central resource for planners, engineers, and policymakers, offering a consistent framework for how trip generation data are collected, shared, and applied in land use and transport planning.
The TRIPS Hub ensures that the TRIPS Database continues to evolve — integrating new datasets, analytical tools, and research insights that capture the changing patterns of travel behaviour, development, and urban mobility.
The TRIPS Hub leverages the research excellence and industry expertise of the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) at the University of Sydney to bring together data, research, and practice — strengthening the evidence base for development and transport assessment across Australia.
Its key objectives are to:
The TRIPS Database currently includes data from 786 surveyed sites across 11 land use classes and 30 sub-classes, sourced from Transport for NSW and TMR Queensland, with ongoing expansion into other jurisdictions.
It standardises how trip and parking generation data are collected and reported, enabling more reliable comparisons between developments, land uses, and locations.
Researchers, practitioners, and policymakers can use TRIPS to better understand the relationships between development scale, location, and travel demand — providing a strong foundation for smarter, evidence-based transport planning across Australia.
The development of the TRIPS database was guided by a dedicated Project Reference Group (PRG) established to ensure the tool responds to real-world industry needs and remains consistent with requirements across all Australian jurisdictions and New Zealand. The PRG comprised representatives from local councils, state transport authorities, Austroads, ITS Australia, Auckland Transport, the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), and leading private consulting and traffic survey firms, providing a broad and practical perspective throughout the project.
TRIPS Hub operates as a collaborative platform connecting universities, government agencies, and consulting organisations. It is sustained through subscriptions to the TRIPS Database and the support of its foundational partners, who actively contribute to shaping research priorities, guiding data collection, and informing future system enhancements.
TRIPS follows a foundational partnership model involving state government and industry organisations. Current foundational partners include Transport for NSW (TfNSW) and the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland (TMR QLD). The establishment and ongoing success of the TRIPS Hub are made possible through the continued commitment and collaboration of these partners.
By pooling data, expertise, and resources, TRIPS Hub is establishing a shared national standard that promotes consistency, transparency, and innovation in transport planning practice across Australia.
We welcome collaborations with practitioners, consultants, and agencies who wish to contribute trip generation survey data, participate in research, or access the TRIPS Database.

By combining academic rigor with on-the-ground experience, the project team ensures that research outputs are practical, actionable, and aligned with the needs of decision-makers. This collaborative model bridges the gap between research and implementation — translating data and insight into smarter, more sustainable transport outcomes.
