The University of Sydney has been awarded $5 million over five years to support research to improve the lives of women at work and progress gender equality in Australia.
Professor Rae Cooper AO and Professor Elizabeth Hill will lead a team of 11 researchers from the University of Sydney’s Australian Centre for Gender Equality and Inclusion @ Work in partnership with a consortium of leading researchers from the University of Technology Sydney and the University of Melbourne.
“Gender equality is not just a priority for the government, it is also integral to the University’s vision of leadership for good backed by research that transforms lives,†University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Mark Scott said.
“We are delighted to partner with government to progress the goal of achieving gender equality in Australia, and proud to have our research leadership recognised in this vital work.â€
Building on the team’s decades of agenda-setting research, the five-year project will collect and analyse quantitative and qualitative data through surveys, interviews and focus groups, to identify the barriers and enablers to women’s economic equality and produce actionable insights for structural change.
This is an exciting opportunity for our research team to support the Australian Government in achieving the ambitious goals of the national strategy for gender equality.
Professor Rae Cooper AO
“Our work will provide a rigorous evidence base, ensuring the government has the data-driven insights needed to drive meaningful progress towards gender equality.â€
Professor Hill said: “Led by the Australian Centre for Gender Equality and Inclusion at Work at the University of Sydney, this initiative brings together world-leading experts to help make the ‘world of work’ better for women.
Ìı“We know from our research that when the economy works better for women it works better for all Australians.â€
The research consortium will also be joined by colleagues from the University of Western Australia, RMIT University, Western Sydney University, Australian National University, UNSW Sydney and Curtin University. See below for a full list of the research team.
