Emergencies and safety on campus

We are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all students.

In an emergency

1. Dial triple zero (000)

Dial triple zero (000) for emergency services (fire/ambulance/police). Calling the police is the quickest way to get help in an emergency.

To speak to about an incident of sexual harassment or assault, dial triple zero (000) or contact the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.

2. Call campus security on 9351 3333

Notify Campus Security via the SafeZone app, or by phoning on +61Ìý2Ìý9351Ìý3333 or 1800 SYD HLP (1800 793 457). Campus Security are available 24 hours a day to assist with an emergency or safety threat. Our security officers are certified to perform first aid and their vehicles are equipped with automatic defibrillators.

Report a safety concern

If you feel unsafe on campus or are concerned for someone else’s safety, contact Campus Security using the SafeZone app or by phoning +61Ìý2Ìý9351Ìý3333 or 1800 SYD HLP (1800 793 457), 24 hours a day.

If you notice a hazard or injure yourself, it should be reported to a University supervisor or another staff member as soon as reasonably possible. You can request first aid and report hazards via the SafeZone app.

Your safety responsibilities

To help us achieve a welcoming and safe learning environment, we ask that you:

  • take reasonable care for your own safety and others
  • comply with reasonable instructions and signage
  • cooperate with emergency procedures
  • report any hazards, injuries or incidents to your supervisor
  • reach out for assistance if you need help.

SafeZone app

SafeZone is a free safety app for all students and staff. SafeZone enables you to quickly contact Protective Services for emergencies, first aid, or general assistance.

In the event of an emergency, SafeZone will send real-time safety alerts through app-based push notifications and via SMS, including location-specific information depending on which campus you're at or building you're in.

Staying safe tips

  • To quickly contact Protective Services for emergencies, first aid, or general assistance, and receive emergency notifications, download the SafeZone app.
  • For access to maps, locations and amenities, download the Sydney Uni app.
  • Avoid isolated areas, particularly after hours. Free shuttle buses operate to help you get around quickly and safely in the evenings.
  • When walking around the University watch out for traffic and use designated road crossings. Never cross a road while using headphones or a mobile phone.
  • Some areas of the University pose specific risks to health and safety, such as laboratories and workshops. Unauthorised access to these areas is restricted.
  • If you have a medical condition or disability that could impact on your health or safety on campus, please disclose this confidentially to relevant staff.
  • Emergency help points which connect directly to Campus Security are located across our main campus and can be found on our under 'amenities'.
  • Attend lecture streams only as timetabled to avoid overcrowding of lecture theatres.

Sexual harassment or assault

If you need to talk to someone about an incident of sexual or indecent assault, or make a complaint about other misconduct, call our confidential helpline service.

Specialist staff can assist you in reporting and resolving issues such as:

  • sexual harassment or assault, including stalking
  • intimidating or threatening behaviour
  • discrimination or unfair treatment.

This help line can also connect you with other University support services during business hours (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday), and 24-hour external help from the NSW Rape Crisis Centre.

Counselling

If you have witnessed or been involved in a critical incident, whether on or off campus, and would like to book an appointment with a counsellor, contact the University’s Student Counselling Service on +61 2 8627 8433 or +61 2 7255 1562 or email student.wellbeing@sydney.edu.au from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday. This service also provides resources and support to help you deal with the effects of a critical incident.

If you notice a maintenance or work health and safety issue, contact Campus Assist on 1300 CAMPUS (1300 226 787) or visit your nearest Campus Assist precinct office.
