Who's eligible
You must:
- be a domestic or international student
- enrolled full-time in the third year of Doctor of Medicine at the Northern Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney
- be undertaking an Elective Term overseas.
Background
This scholarship was established in 2020 to provide assistance to students studying Doctor of Medicine at the Northern Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney in undertaking their elective term studies overseas.
This scholarship has been donated by Graham Rush Easton in memory of Dr Tom Easton, who had completed his medical degree at the Northern Clinical School in 1999. He suffered from cystic fibrosis and passed away, aged 24, in January 2000, just at the commencement of his internship at Royal North Shore Hospital.
Tom studied medicine not only as his chosen profession but for the experiences it provided and for the contribution he believed he could make. He was an active and committed student at Northern, balancing his medical studies, his contributions to student life in the Clinical School and his other community and sporting activities. His warm and relaxed manner, integrity and quiet courage were ever-present. Tom lived beyond his illness. It never conquered his spirit.
It is intended to encourage proposals that reflect Tom's approach and have the potential to enrich the medical education and practical experience of both the students and those with whom they work during the elective term. Such a proposal may involve splitting the elective term into two parts, one devoted to practical medical training and the other to social / community medicine in a remote or deprived environment.
1. Background
a. This Scholarship was established in 2020 to provide assistance to students studying DoctorÌýof Medicine at the Northern Clinical School, Sydney Medical School, Faculty of Medicine andÌýHealth, University of Sydney in undertaking their elective term studies overseas.
b. This Scholarship has been donated by Graham Rush Easton in memory of Dr Tom Easton,Ìýwho has completed his medical degree at the Northern Clinical School in 1999.
2. Eligibility
a. Applicants must be currently enrolled full-time in the third year of Doctor of Medicine at theÌýNorthern Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney.
b. Applicants must be undertaking an Elective Term overseas.
3. Selection Criteria
a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:
I. curriculum vitae,
II. a personal statement explaining where and why they intend to undertake theÌýelective placement, and
b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of School, School of Medicine, or theirÌýnominated delegate(s).Ìý
4. Value
a. The Scholarship is valued at $4,000 and will be paid as a one-off payment.
b. Deferral and/or suspension of the Scholarship is not permitted, and it is not transferable toÌýanother University school, faculty or university.
c. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.
d. No other amount is payable.
5. Ongoing eligibility
a. The recipient/s are required to do a brief presentation of their elective term at the NCS annual prizeÌýnight at the end of year 4.
6. Termination
a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:
I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. commences part-time study,Ìý
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, or
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but notÌýlimited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their ScholarshipÌýapplication.
b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to UniversityÌýerror.
c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminatedÌýunder any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the UniversityÌýreserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient beÌýreimbursed.Ìý
